Have you ever search the Internet before? What is the very first page you go to whenever you need to find an information from Internet? The Search Engine?

When you sit down in front of your computer and do a search engine search, be it Yahoo, Google or MSN etc, you are almost instantly presented with lots of search results relevant to your search terms. Have you wonder how search engine find websites that match your search query and most important determine the order of search results?

When you sit down at your computer and do a Google search, you’re almost instantly presented with a list of results from all over the web. How does Google find web pages matching your query, and determine the order of search results?

Basically when anyone perform a search in a search engine, their back end algorithm will check their database or index to determine the most relevant search results to be returned back to “served” you. The 3 main key processes in delivering serach results to you are crawling, indexing and serving result.

Crawling

Crawling is the process commonly used by google by which Googlebot discovers new and updated pages to be added to the Google index.

They use a huge set of computers to collect information from billions of pages on the web. The program that does the fetching is called Googlebot (also known as a robot, bot, or spider). Googlebot uses an algorithmic process: computer programs determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site.

Google’s crawl process begins with a list of web page URLs, generated from previous crawl processes, and augmented with Sitemap data provided by webmasters. As Googlebot visits each of these websites it detects links on each page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New sites, changes to existing sites, and dead links are noted and used to update the Google index.

Google doesn’t accept payment to crawl a site more frequently.

Indexing

After search engine gather a database, they will process each of the page into a massive index of all the words it see and their location on each page. Of course, different search engine something do it differently. For example google, they will process information included in key content tags and attributes, such as ALT attributes and Title tags. Not all type of pages are index-able by search engine for example rich media files like flash and video, dynamic pages and secured pages, these are files and places which search engine cannot index.

Serving Results

When a user enter a search term, search engine will search the index for matching pages and return the best result their machine believe relevant to the user. With strong competition within many major search engine company, they know to retant and attract user, relevancy in search result is very important. In google, relevancy is determined by over 200 factors, one of which is the PageRank for a given page. PageRank is the measure of the importance of a website based on the incoming links from other website. As technology improve, google is always improving their relevancy checks by identifying spam links and other practices that negatively impact search results. The best types of links are those that are given based on the quality of the site content.
How to make sure your website rank well in search engine?
